A klystron is a specialized linear-beam vacuum tube which is used as an amplifier for high radio frequencies, from UHF up into the microwave range. It was invented in 1937 by American electrical engineers Russell and Sigurd Varian from university of Stanford.

The term ‘klys’ comes from the stem form of a Greek verb mentioning to the wave action breaking against a shore. And the suffix ‘tron’ is … Of them all, Klystron is an important one. The essential elements of Klystron are electron beams and cavity resonators. Electron beams are produced from a source and the cavity klystrons are employed to amplify the signals.

19). After emerging from the second gap, the electrons pass to a collector designed to dissipate the remaining beam power without the production of secondary electrons. Klystron, thermionic electron tube that generates or amplifies microwaves by controlling the speed of a stream of electrons. “Klystron” is a portmanteau of the Greek verb κλύζω (“klyzo”) – which refers to the action of waves breaking against a shore – and the suffix -τρον ("tron") – which refers to the place where the action happens. Klystrons belong to the same family of linear-beam tubes as traveling-wave tubes (TWTs).

Low-power klystrons are used as oscillators in terrestrial microwave relay communications links, while high-power klystrons are used as output tubes in UHF television As nouns the difference between magnetron and klystron is that magnetron is magnetron while klystron is (physics) an electron tube used to amplify microwave-frequency electromagnetic radiation.

A klystron is basically a vacuum tube with input and output structures replaced with resonant cavities known as buncher cavity and catcher cavity. Normally it functions as amplifier. The klystron with internal or external feedback built in its design can function as oscillator.
